Watershed Residency - Cross Pollination

Session V: Cross Pollination, August 5-16

Martha Grover

Organized by: Audry Deal-McEver & Martha Grover
With: Dawn Candy, Jennifer Cole, Dawn Dishaw, Sarah Pike & Lindsay Rogers

Over time, botanical ecosystems evolve in response to ecological change. Species rarely thrive in isolation but rather coexist in symbiotic relationships that promote growth and development. In this spirit, Cross Pollination welcomes clay artists inspired by the botanical world who are interested in sharing their experiences, techniques, processes, and research. While many artists anchoring the session focus on functional ware, the ideas behind this residency align with sculptural and installation work as well. The cohort will gather to share ideas while gaining fresh inspiration from Watershed’s bucolic campus.

Pocosin Online Workshop - Learning to Alter Pots

Have you always been too nervous to alter your pots? Are you looking to change the shape of your work away from round? This class is a perfect introduction to altering hand-built and wheel-thrown forms. Martha will show how you can push, indent, expand, cut, dart, alter, and stack your pieces to create new interest and dynamic forms. We will work with a variety of cylinders changing the shapes, adding bottoms and handles, and discussing the myriad of ways you can play with your pots to change them into creative, lively vessels. Any clay body can be used for the techniques that will be discussed, though Martha will be using porcelain for the demonstrations.

Some experience in basic pottery skills and knowledge is recommended for this workshop.

Michiana Pottery Tour – September 29 & 30, 2019

The Michiana Pottery Tour includes more than 30 artists at seven locations across northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan. The two day tour takes place on the final Saturday and Sunday of September every year.

We’re interested in promoting the Michiana region as a hub for contemporary ceramics. Michiana has been home to many clay artists for more than 4 decades. Its also a new home for many new and emerging ceramic talents. We’ve been building a legacy in clay for many years, and here’s a video to tell you about it.

We hope you enjoy the region, the potters, and the beautiful countryside as much as we do.

Date and Time:

Saturday, September 29 from 10 AM thru 5 PM EST and Sunday, September 30 from 11 AM thru 4 PM EST.

About the Artists:

Many of the participating artists are local to Indiana and Michigan, however several guest artists from neighboring states will also be participating. This tour is a great opportunity to view a wide variety of work and discover new local artists. Nearly all of the participants have lived or worked in the Michiana area at some point in their career.

Artists taking part in the tour include seven stop hosts:

Mark Goertzen, Dick Lehman, Justin Rothshank, Brandon Schwartz, Sadie Misiuk, Zach Tate, and the Goshen Clay Artists Guild.

For more information on individual artists visit our Artists page.

Locations:

There are seven different locations on the tour, with each location featuring multiple artists. Most of the locations are in or near Goshen, IN. About one hours drive separates the two farthest locations.

For a list of locations on the tour visit out Map page.

Parking and Payment:

Free parking is available at each location of the tour. There is no charge for attending the tour. Feel free to stop by and visit any location throughout the day. If you wish to purchase pottery, credit cards, cash, and checks will be accepted at each location as payment.
